Cakras (pronounced “chakras”) are the body's natural energy centres, spread along a central column from the base of our spine to the crown of our head. There are seven key cakras, which resemble three-dimensional spinning vortices or wheels. Each is represented by a location, colour, symbol, mantra, element, and specific role in cultivating well-being.

Cakras are associated with organs and glands of the region where they are located and thus impact our health, state of mind, and relationships with others.  When a cakra is ‘imbalanced’, it either becomes hypoactive or hyperactive. When hypoactive, a cakra’s functioning is either insufficient or reduced. When hyperactive, there is too much energy flowing into that region, and as such, there is an imbalance in the overall flow of energy throughout the body. Since cakras are interrelated, when one of them is imbalanced, it causes a disturbance in the functionality of the others as well. This can manifest as health problems in one or more areas of the body and mind.

In this course, you will be guided through the four keys to balancing cakras:

  1. Asanas: physical postures help to stimulate the cakras and improve their functioning. They also clear the way for the cakras to heal themselves

  2. Pranayama: breathing practices help increase the flow of prana in the body and remove energetic blockages

  3. Meditation: helps to focus and clear the mind

  4. Chanting: each of the cakras has an accompanying mantra which can be chanted out loud or silently
